iOS 10 Now Running on 60 Percent of Active Devices, Apple Says

iOS 10 Now Running on 60 Percent of Active Devices, Apple SaysEarlier this month, Apple released figures of the adoption rate of various version of iOS. The statistics on October at the time showed that more than half of active iOS devices, 54 percent to be precise, had already moved on to the latest version of iOS. Now, the Cupertino-based company has revealed the latest numbers, which reveal that more people are gradually moving to iOS 10.

According to the new numbers made available by Apple on Tuesday through its App Store Distribution page, around 60 percent of the iOS devices visiting the App Store are now using iOS 10. Almost the entire rise in adoption of the operating system has come from iOS 9 users who now form 32 percent of the total iOS users, compared with 38 percent in earlier report.
The company claims around 8 percent of active iOS devices are presently on operating system versions before iOS 9.
To give you further perspective of the adoption rate, iOS 10 was reported to be running on 22.31 percent of active iOS devices in just three days since its release. Notably, this was a slower adoption rate compared to iOS 9, which registered the fastest adoption rate in company’s history. Around 50 percent of iOS devices upgraded to iOS 9 in just three days after its launch.
In order to provide the optimum security features to their users, smartphone manufacturers have to consider the number of users that are eventually benefiting from their software rollouts. The adoption rate has now become more crucial factor than ever while drawing comparisons between iOS and Google’s mobile operating system Android. This is because recently it was revealed that a large number of latter’s users are vulnerable to a dated malware simply because they are still on earlier versions of Android.

Gmail for iOS Gets Overhauled With New Design, Undo Send Feature, and More

Gmail for iOS Gets Overhauled With New Design, Undo Send Feature, and MoreGoogle’s Gmail app on iOS has been updated by the search giant and the company has termed the latest update as “The biggest overhaul of the app in nearly four years.” The largest component of this overhaul is constituted by visual aspect of the app as it has been redesigned entirely. The new interface of the app on iOS is fairly reminiscent of the Android version due to its Material Design philosophy.

The Gmail for iOS update (v5.0.3) does not stop at the redesign as it adds an important feature that was earlier missing from the app – Undo Send. There must have been times when you might have sent a mail by mistake and wanted to undo it but couldn’t. This feature allows you to prevent the humiliation that can be caused from such a situation. Users will be able to choose from 5, 10, 20, and 30-second windows in which they can perform the Undo Send function. It can be turned on and adjusted from Settings > Undo Send.

“It’s the Gmail you know and love, with a fresh new look, sleeker transitions and some highly-requested features. It’s a lot faster, too,” the search giant said in its official blog post.
Gmail app on iOS now provides better spelling suggestions as well as allows you to search for the mails even faster. “Search faster with instant results and spelling suggestions (like when you type ‘flighht’, but you really meant ‘flight’),” the company said.
With the Gmail for iOS update, users can now swipe to archive and delete the mails within the app on iOS. The update is already available and can be downloaded from the App Store. Google on Monday also overhauled the Calendar app for iOS.

iPhone Supplier InvenSense Said to Be Exploring Sale

iPhone Supplier InvenSense Said to Be Exploring SaleInvenSense Inc, a US semiconductor company that makes motion sensors for Apple and Samsung, is exploring strategic alternatives, including a possible sale, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.

InvenSense shares jumped as much as 13 percent on the news, and were trading up 61 cents at $7.48 by late afternoon, giving the company a market capitalisation of nearly $700 million.

If it succeeds in selling itself, InvenSense would be the latest company to be swept up by a wave of consolidation in the industry, as makers of chips for smartphones face intense price competition and seek scale.

Smartphone chip maker Qualcomm agreed to buy NXP Semiconductors NV for about $38 billion this week, in the biggest-ever deal in the semiconductor industry.

InvenSense, which designs gyroscopes to help smartphones calculate motion, is working with an investment bank to explore its options, the people said. Chinese and Japanese companies are among interested suitors, they added.
There is no certainty that the sale process will result in any deal, the people cautioned.

The sources asked not to be identified because the deliberations are confidential. InvenSense could not be reached for comment.
Northland Capital Markets analyst Tom Sepenzis said in a research note last month that the growth of virtual reality, especially in China, could help InvenSense’s prospects.

“InvenSense is certainly well positioned as there are no Chinese companies offering gyroscopes,” Sepenzis said.

InvenSense, which competes with STMicroelectronics NV and Bosch Sensortech, got a boost in August when Pacific Crest Securities upgraded the rating on its stock, arguing the gyroscopes are essential to mobile phones for augmented reality games such as Pokemon Go.

InvenSense’s chief executive Behrooz Abdi talked up the Pokemon Go opportunity on the company’s last earnings call in July, and said more consumers playing games that involve moving around with their phones would boost demand for its gyroscope products.

iOS Developers Can Now Distribute Promo Codes for In-App Purchases

iOS Developers Can Now Distribute Promo Codes for In-App PurchasesApple on Friday announced that iOS app developers can now generate promo codes for in-app purchases from iTunes Connect. This feature will give developers an official way to provide access to in-app purchases to testers, the press, and other influencers.

Apple says promo codes for in-app purchases are limited to 100 codes per in-app purchase item, with up to a maximum of 1,000 codes per app within a six-month period – which resets on January 1 and July 1. Developers can request codes from iTunes Connect in My Apps > Features. Apple on its resource page says users must have access to Admin, App Manager, Legal, or Marketer role to generate codes.

As before, promo codes are valid for 28 days from the day they are generated. Apple states promo codes can also be given for auto-renewable subscriptions, and also as before, to provide a free copy of an app.

The move will be beneficial to app developers who previously had to resort to unofficial workarounds to provide in-app purchases to reviewers and testers.

Apple has recently made changes to the App Store in order to make it easier for developers to sell their wares, and for users to discover them. Earlier this month, the company enabled Search Ads – search-related advertising that is meant to be a non-intrusive way for app developers to surface their products in user searches.

Search Ads were unveiled alongside several changes to the App Store in June, including a major shift in the revenue model for auto-renewed paid apps after the first year of subscription. Apple in September also said it was actively cleaning up the App Store, scrutinising it for unwanted apps or those developers indulging in frowned-upon search optimisation practices.

Apple Watch 2017 to Sport Micro-LED Display, Sharp to Provide iPhone Oled Display

Apple is currently making headlines for its upcoming iPhone 7, but the company must be working on other products in its portfolio. A fresh round of leaks gives us more details on the company’s efforts with the Apple Watch, and the rumoured integrated GPU display. There’s also new a report that claims that Apple plans to rope in a third company to manufacture its Oled displays for its next year’s iPhone.Apple Watch 2017 to Sport Micro-LED Display, Sharp to Provide iPhone Oled Display: Reports

Beginning with the Apple Watch, the Cupertino giant may be switching from LCD displays to Micro-LED displays forits 2017 iteration. Apple will reportedly not follow the same iPhone path for its smartwatch, and switch to the rumoured Oled displays. Instead, the company will opt for Micro-LED displays on the 2017 Apple Watch (claims Digitimes). Micro LED is equipped with better colour gamuts and brightness levels, when compared to LCD. It even uses less battery than LCD (hence more battery life on the Apple Watch), and can even be much thinner as it doesn’t require backlighting.

It is worth noting, that Apple had acquired LuxVue Technology in 2014, a company that specialised in Micro-LED displays. It appears that Apple is looking to put that acquisition to some use in its Apple Watch next year.

Furthermore, the company is apparently not giving up on its display business just yet. While theThunderbolt Display has been officially discontinued, BuzzFeed reporter John Paczkowski citing people familiar with the matter claims that Apple is working on a new display with an integrated GPU, as was previously rumoured. The display is said to sport a 5K (5120×2880 pixels) resolution, and is expected to be called the ‘Apple 5K Display’.

Lastly, the iPhone this year is expected to come with minimum design changes, with Apple stocking the big changes for the iPhone’s 10-year anniversary next year. One of the big rumoured features for next year’s iPhone is expected to be the switch to Oled displays. Now, Nikkei reports that Apple will rope in a third manufacturer to meet the demands of Oled displays for its iPhone. Alongside LG and Samsung, Foxconn-acquired Sharp will also be manufacturing the Oled displays for Apple.

“Sharp currently supplies display panels to Apple, but it does not own Oled technology yet. Foxconn has said it will invest 200 billion yen to help Sharp develop the technology,” the report reads.

The iPhone 7 this year is expected to be unveiled in September. Rumours claim that Apple is releasingthree variants, and the larger iPhone 7 Plus will come with a dual camera setup, 3GB RAM, and a possible Smart Connector at the back.

Apple Admits It Doesn’t Know How Many People Read Its News App

Apple Admits It Doesn't Know How Many People Read Its News App

Apple doesn’t know how many people are reading its News app. The Cupertino company has admitted that it has been miscounting the page views. This has left both Apple and the publishers unaware of exactly how many people are actually reading on the service. News, the company-built news reading app, was released to the public with iOS 9 in September last year.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services told the Wall Street Journal that a software glitch in News reading app has altered the number, showing numbers lowers than reality.

The company statement comes weeks after many Apple News publication partners complained the traffic they were receiving from Apple News was “underwhelming.” Many also said the data Apple was providing them was essentially “non-existent.”

Cue said that the company overlooked the glitch when building the app as it was more focused on other aspects. He added that the company is working on fixing the glitch. “We’re in the process of fixing that now, but our numbers are lower than reality,” he said. “We don’t know what the right number is.”

He told the publication that 40 million people have used News app since its release. Exactly how frequently, and how many of them visit the app, and how long they stay are among the things that no-one has much clue about. Cue said the company is happy with Apple News thus far, and that it has received positive feedback, adding that usage has “scaled very fast…but it doesn’t mean we don’t all want more.”.

Released with iOS 9 on September 16, 2015, News not only curates articles from select sources, it also provides publishers a platform to publish content directly on its service. The company is offering publishers a 100 percent cut on the money the ads on their stories generate. The company offers a 70 percent cut on the ads it sells to publishers. It can be likened to Facebook’s Instant Articles, for which Google is building its own Accelerated Mobile Pages in answer.
