Why You Should Monitor what Your Employees Do on Their Computers

Every business in the world is fully reliant on computers. And pretty much all computers, but particularly those in businesses, are connected to the internet. A lot of this is beneficial, improving your overall efficiency and businesses processes. However, it can also be a significant distraction to employees who may become tempted to surf the web for their own personal reasons. You can help to avoid this, while at the same time checking on it, by installing event monitoring software on your computers. Let’s take a look at some of the key reasons why this may be a good idea.

  1. It Increases Productivity

Even monitoring software is not in place to spy on your employees. In fact, you should be open and transparent about the fact that it is there. At the end of the day, your ultimate goal should be to have increased productivity, not to catch your employees doing something wrong. The simple fact that they know the software is there will put most people off using the internet for personal reasons and becoming inefficient. Not just that, these event monitoring programs also demonstrates which programs are used and when, which ensures you can determine whether you are not overpaying for licenses for programs you don’t even use.

  1. It Protects Intellectual Property

If your work is reliant on models, processes, or other forms of confidential know-how, then it is even more important that event monitoring tools are in place. This software will provide a wealth of data that can be analyzed to make sure no confidential data is sent to untrusted sources or, if it is, who sent it there. Not just that, you can determine whether it was sent through instant messaging, email, or any other medium. Essentially, it is a chance to make sure the code of conduct is being followed and that your employees are 100% ethical.

  1. It Helps to Reduce Corporate Risk

Last but not least, event monitoring will help you to determine who did what and when. This can be very important in cases of, for example, a data breach, in which you have to identify where the problem came from. Unfortunately, the reality is also that some employees will go out of their way to sabotage your organization, and event monitoring can help you identify that if you have some suspicions.

Event monitoring software is a type of spyware. However, it is completely legal to use it. In a workplace, however, it is best practice to ensure your employees are aware of the fact that you do monitor them, and that you can pull up reports on their behavior whenever you want. That is not because you don’t trust them, but because we live in a digital age where both temptations and dangers are absolutely everywhere. Thanks to this type of software, you can encourage people not be tempted, while at the same time being able to identify a source should some sort of attack happen.

What Should Your Digital Marketing Strategy Include?

Once upon a time, achieving online success was easier than anything else. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Everybody is online, which has massively increased the competition. Not just that, all consumers are also online, and they have some pretty high expectations in terms of what they can find from online businesses. This is why all companies should now make sure they have an SEO strategy in place (SEO means search engine optimization) to make sure they remain relevant in today’s competitive world. That said, creating an SEO strategy requires extensive skills and knowledge, which is why you should choose a professional company to handle it. Below are important tips to help you choose the best company.

  1. Make Sure the Provider Is Local

Google, and the other search engines, have put a strong emphasis on local search results. They understand that, while everything is now online, people still want to go out and visit stores. Hence, their algorithm now also looks at whether the website indicates where in the country they are, and preference is given to those in local areas. This is why you should choose to work with a local SEO agency, as they understand the market you actually want to target.

  1. Do Not Outsource to Overseas Country

Nowadays, you can outsource pretty much everything to China or India at a cost that simply sounds too good to be true. In fact, that is exactly what it is. Sure, you can hire an entire call center staffed with 200 people who work around the clock for you, they will not actually offer you any benefits. They are overworked and underpaid, do not have any loyalty to your business (they are likely to work with other business as well, in fact), and they don’t truly know your service or product. Added to this is the fact that consumers in this country do not like to work with foreign countries that have been outsourced to. They see it as local jobs being taken away, and they won’t like you for it.

  1. Make Sure Your Strategy Is Customized

There are two key ways in which you can recognize a bad SEO agency:

  1. They 100% guarantee to get you on the first page of Google (impossible).
  2. They offer only package solutions, meaning that they are one size fits all options.

Every business is unique, which is why guarantees can never be made. Because of this uniqueness, it is also impossible to predict with a degree of certainty which services a specific business will require.

  1. Get Progress Reports

You should regularly receive reports on which action points have been completed and when, and what the measured effects have been. These reports should be than just informative, they should be read and re-read.

There you have it, four key tips. A final thing to remember is that you must be careful, as SEO agencies will work with anybody, including your competition!

5 Principles of Successful Innovation

A lot of businesses see innovation as something quite scary, because it is a dive into the unknown. As a result, things get over-complicated. One of the reasons for this is that there are so many enterprise innovation management software services out there, all of them so good, that it can become a bit overwhelming to pick one. While all of them are very good, they do all take different approaches. Hence, if you were to study two of them, or read two books on innovation, or listen to two innovation speakers, you will get conflicting information.

However, all agree that there are five key principles to making innovation successful. It doesn’t matter whether you are a huge Fortune 500 multinational conglomeration, or whether you are a mom and pop startup store on a high street in a rural village. Everyone should innovate, and everyone can do that by following these five tips.

The 5 Key Principles of Innovation

The first principle is that you must get out into the real world. Stop sitting in a closed room, around a desk, pouring over an idea with the intent of perfecting it. Take the idea, in its rawest form, outside into the area where it will eventually be applied, and test it out. That is how you can learn the most.

The second principle is that you must find a way to learn faster than what anyone else does. Sure, being the first mover is great, but being a sustainable mover is even greater. Invest as many resources as possible into getting to know your customer, and continue to allocate these resources, even if the idea is already implemented.

The third principle is that you have to be lean with your experiments. Do not blow your entire budget on an idea only to find it doesn’t work. Best practice across all organizations is to be lean by properly utilizing the other resources (time and people!) that you have available to you. Doing that is innovative in its own right.

The fourth principle is that you should not create things people don’t want to have. If you develop an idea, you will probably love it. That is the id, ego, and superego in all of us that Sigmund Freud developed. The problem is that, as much as you may love your idea, other people may not. What you need to learn to love is the opinion of your customers.

The fifth and final principle links to that clearly: innovation is about solving the problems your customers have. They will come to you because you give them something they want that nobody else offers. There is no point creating something that they are not looking for in the first place.

These are your five principles and you must stick to them. So much so, in fact, that you should print them out and hand them to everybody in your organization. Reference to them every step of the way, and see how much of a difference they will make.

SoftBank Posts Massive $560 Million Loss on Ola, Snapdeal Investments

SoftBank Posts Massive $560 Million Loss on Ola, Snapdeal InvestmentsJapan’s SoftBank Corp has booked an investment loss of JPY 58.14 billion ($560 million or roughly Rs. 3,705 crores) on its investments in India including cab-hailing firm Ola and e-commerce company Snapdeal.

In the earning statement for six months ended September 30, SoftBank wrote off JPY 58.14 billion in the value of shares in its investments in India, which include ANI Technologies, owns country’s largest cab aggregator Ola, and Jasper Infotech, which runs e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal.

Of that, JPY 29.62 billion (roughly Rs. 1,887 crores) was due to a currency impairment. “Gain or loss arising from financial instruments at FVTPL (fair value through profit or loss) comprises mainly changes in fair value of preferred stock investment including embedded derivatives, such as ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd and Jasper Infotech Private Limited in India, designated as financial assets at FVTPL,” SoftBank said in the earnings statement.

The Japanese firm had led a $210-million (roughly Rs. 1,399 crores) investment in Ola and $627 million (roughly Rs. 4,177 crores) in Snapdeal in October 2014. It made follow-on investments in both firms. Both Ola and Snapdeal are looking at raising fresh funds to sustain operations amid growing competition from rivals.
Bengaluru-based Ola has so far raised about $1.2 billion from a clutch of investors including Tiger Global Management, Matrix Partners, SoftBank Group and Didi Chuxing.

Last year, Snapdeal.com raised $500 million from Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, Foxconn Technology Group and existing investor SoftBank Group, which then valued the Delhi-based firm at about $4.8 billion post money.
SoftBank has so far invested close to $2 billion in India and earlier this year it stated that it is looking to scale up the investment to $10 billion in next 5-10 years.

Last month, it said it will form a new fund with Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund to invest as much as $100 billion in the global technology industry in the next five years.

“My goal is to become the Warren Buffett of the tech industry. We’re aiming to be the Berkshire Hathaway of tech,” SoftBank Group Corp Chief Executive Masayoshi Son said after the earnings announcement.

For the July-September quarter, SoftBank posted a net profit of JPY 512 billion (roughly Rs. 32,610 crores), compared with JPY 213 billion the year before, boosted by gains from the sale of stakes in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Finnish game maker Supercell Oy.

Reserve Bank of India Website Down After PM Narendra Modi’s 500, 1000 Notes Announcement

Reserve Bank of India Website Down After PM Narendra Modi's 500, 1000 Notes AnnouncementPM Narendra Modi dropped a proverbial bombshell on Tuesday by announcing that Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes will be demonetised as of midnight. While the Prime Minister announced that banks will accept these notes for a fixed amount of time, many have been turning to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to figure out the fineprint of how the exact process will roll out. There’s just one problem – the Reserve Bank of India website seems to have crumbled under the load.

Multiple attempts to access the Reserve Bank of India website by Gadgets 360 between 10:30pm and 11:20pm IST on Tuesday night were greeted by the “Cannot find server” message, which indicates the RBI website cannot handle the heavy demand. Now, sure, this can also be the result of a scheduled maintenance, but you would typically see a “This website is under maintenance” kind of a message from a website like the Reserve Bank of India, instead of an error message like this.

While we wait for the RBI website to be accessible again, here’s some basic information about the Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes that became clear from PM Narendra Modi’s speech on Tuesday.

What you need to do with your Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes:

  • Deposit them at the bank or post office from November 10 to December 30
  • Exchange them from a bank or post office till 24 November. The limit for exchange is Rs. 4000
  • Take Aadhaar card and Pan Card when you go to exchange notes
  • After December 30, these can be deposited at the Reserve Bank with a declaration
  • Tourists can change the notes at airports

Your Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes be accepted till November 11 at:

  • Petrol Pumps and government hospitals
  • Railway, airline, government bus ticket booking counters
  • Consumer co-operative stores run by state or central government
  • Milk booths authorised by state governments
  • Crematoriums and burial grounds

Houzz Remodelling and Interior Decoration Platform Launched in India

Houzz Remodelling and Interior Decoration Platform Launched in IndiaHome renovation and design platform Houzz has launched in India. The entry into India marks the company’s fifteenth market, and alongside, it is also expanding its Pro+ service previously only available in the US to six other countries – excluding India.

Apart from the website, Houzz is a popular app for Android and iOS platforms that apart from allowing users to browse and submit design ideas; read and connect with home professionals, also provides a ‘Sketch’ feature for users to annotate, draw on, or add products to their photos.

Speaking with TechCrunch, Houzz co-founder and CEO Adi Tatarko said the company already had a large community in India before its launch here. She added that the home renovation and design site received over a million unique monthly visitors from India, and that the over 40,000 local professionals were already using the site’s services.

While Houzz.in currently lists products with links to retailers, it has not yet started its e-commerce section in the country with which it directly sells home products in other regions. As we mentioned, the company has not yet brought its Pro+ service, a local marketing program and subscription service for home professionals, to the country. Tatarko says however she is looking to bring both e-commerce and Pro+ to India in the near future. The India site currently displays a ‘beta’ tag.
The India launch of Houzz saw the company making several small changes on its website in the name of localisation, such as changing some terms to match the local usage – for example, a ‘general contractor’ became a ‘civil engineer and contractor’ – as well as showcasing local content and architectural styles.
Houzz doesn’t have much established competition in India as yet, so if it can get started on the right foot, the platform may become very popular, directly connecting interior design and architecture professionals with home owners, and providing a base for professionals to showcase their work. The online market for interior decoration and remodelling services is still quite nascent in the country, with only a few names like Houssup, Houzify, and Livspace providing similar services, though there are several furniture and interior decoration e-commerce sites like Pepperfry and FabFurnish on the radar.

The site is currently available in Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the US, the UK, and now, India.

Google Attacks EU Antitrust Case, Says It ‘Doesn’t Fit the Reality’

Google Attacks EU Antitrust Case, Says It 'Doesn't Fit the Reality'Google poured scorn on European Union allegations it skewed shopping search results to favor its own services and said regulators have failed to see that the search-engine giant is competing head on with e-commerce giants Amazon.com and eBay.

Google said Thursday that the EU’s allegations lack evidence and would ultimately harm users in favor “of a small number of websites,” in a blog posting detailing its response to European Commission antitrust objections over its comparison-shopping and AdSense services.

“The commission’s revised case still rests on a theory that just doesn’t fit the reality of how most people shop online,” Kent Walker, Google’s senior vice president and general counsel said in the blog post. The EU’s “claims are wrong as a matter of fact, law, and economics.”

Google faced four EU antitrust complaints since the Brussels-based regulator opened its first probe into the Mountain View, California-based company in November 2010. In a previous response, Google ridiculed as “peculiar and problematic” a first statement of objections over the way it displays search results.
The commission refined its shopping case in July, saying it has “a broad range of additional evidence and data” that the Alphabet Inc. unit systematically favors its own comparison-shopping service in its search results and that smaller rivals lose traffic when they appear lower down in results.

“There is simply no meaningful correlation between the evolution of our search services and the performance of price comparison sites,” Walker said in the blog.

The Brussels-based commission said it received Google’s responses and will “carefully consider” them “before taking any decision on how to proceed.”

Anti-Google campaigners criticized the company’s response.
“When consumers look at Google ads they do not get the best, most relevant results. Instead, they get results from advertisers willing to pay Google the most money,” said Thomas Vinje, a lawyer with Clifford Chance who represents FairSearch Europe, whose members include Expedia and Nokia.

The extra statement of objections in the shopping case “didn’t offer a new theory, but argued that because sites like Amazon sometimes pay” price comparison aggregators “for referred traffic, they can’t also be considered rivals,” said Walker.

Google’s view is that Amazon only gets a small amount of its traffic from such services, “hardly enough to support the idea they don’t compete with price comparison sites,” he said.

“The data show that the handful of price comparison sites who’ve filed competition complaints don’t reflect the wider marketplace,” said Walker. Over the past 10 years “a rapidly increasing amount of traffic flowed from our search pages to popular sites like Amazon and eBay as they expanded in Europe, hardly a sign of our ‘favoring’ our own ads.”

Walker said Google also sent its response to a separate EU complaint accusing the company of obstructing competition for online ads with its AdSense for Search product, which places advertising on websites, including retailers, telecommunications operators and newspapers.

Google has until November 11 to respond to a third charge sheet the EU sent it in April over its Android smartphone software.

The company will respond to the Android antitrust complaint “in the days to come,” said Walker. While all these cases are separate, each time they “cite just a few complaints to justify broad legal claims.”
