Classroom Activities: Mindful Meditation

If you find that your students need to slow down, try some mindful breathing. Many studies show that just taking a few minutes to slow down and listen to yourself breathe can help students let go of any anxiety, stress, or negative emotions. At some point in the day, ask students to put away their materials, turn the lights off, and have them sit comfortably and quietly. Tell students to take a moment and notice how their body feels. Have them pay attention to their breath and the way that they breathe naturally. Have them notice each inhale and exhale coming in and out of their body. If students have a hard time concentrating on their breath, then they can count each inhale and exhale up the number 10 and then keep starting over. Just as teachers want to be heard by their administrators, students want to be heard from you, their teacher. Studies have found that strong student/teacher relationships are the key to a healthy school atmosphere. So, how can you actively listen to your students? Easy, all you have to do is create the time and space to actively listen to their wants and needs.

Try this: Each week, carve out a few minutes out of your day for each student. All you have to do is check in with them and see how they are doing. New Year’s Resolution Classroom Activity

With the start to any New Year comes a time for resolutions. Returning from Christmas break is the perfect time to use a classroom activity to teach your students how they can reflect upon the past year and prepare for a new, fresh start. Use this classroom activityinvolving writing to help your students make their New Year’s Resolutions this year.

Classroom Activity: Introduction

To begin, ask students if they have ever made a New Year’s resolution before, and if so, did they keep it? For the students who have never made a resolution for the New Year, talk about how the word resolution came from the word “resolve.” Talk about how a resolution is like a promise that you keep for yourself. Then, discuss how each year people make resolutions for themselves, but oftentimes they end up being too challenging to keep, so they give up on them. Explain that it’s important to make a positive resolution that they think they will be able to follow through with.

Once they understand the concept, model a few resolutions of your own (start exercising, read a book a week, watch less TV, etc.). Next, have students brainstorm a few together as a class. They may come up with resolutions like stop fighting with their siblings, or be more helpful at home. Make sure that you remind students to not choose something that is too outrageous, and remind them that their goal is to make a resolution that they know they can keep.

Pre-Writing

Once students have a list of the resolutions that they think they want to try, have them narrow that list down to three. They should make one resolution for their own personal improvement (resolve to eat healthy), one that has to do with their family or friends (resolve to not fight with their sister), and one that has to do with school (to learn all of their multiplication facts).

First Draft

Now that students have their three resolutions (or promises to themselves) that they know they will be able to keep, it’s time for them to write a five-paragraph essay about these New Year’s resolutions.  Included in this essay should be the following:

  • First paragraph is to introduce the topic to their audience.
  • Second paragraph is talk about the personal improvement promise that they made to themselves.
  • Third paragraph is discuss the resolution that has to do with their family or friends.
  • Fourth paragraph is where they will describe the promise that they made to themselves about school.
  • The fifth, and final, paragraph will restate the topic and sum up the whole essay about resolutions.

Revising

This is the most critical stage in the writing process and oftentimes the hardest for students. Students need to read and re-read their essay, and ask themselves “Does it sound good?” and “Does it make sense?” Here are a few guidelines to help students during this crucial stage.

  • Look at the first paragraph and ask yourself if the topic sentence is interesting. If not, how can you make it more interesting to the reader?
  • Look at the meat of your essay which is the three middle paragraphs. Does each paragraph explain to the reader what your resolution is and why you are making it?
  • Look at your ending paragraph, did you restate and sum up your essay?
  • Take a look at all of the sentences, is everything spelled correctly? Are all of the sentences complete?

Final Copy

Once students have made of their revisions, they can now type their final project on the computer and print it out. Post these New Year’s resolution essays on the bulletin board in the classroom as a daily reminder of their promises to themselves for the New Year.

Make sure that you take a few moments of your day with your students to look back on the year that just passed. Talk about the learning goals that they have achieved since the start of the year, and talk about what they are going to achieve by the end of this New Year.

Post-Holiday Classroom Activities

For many teachers and students, getting back into the swing of things after the holiday break may be difficult. Everyone is used to sleeping in, and eating and doing whenever they want to, so the school day routine may be a bit hard to get adjusted to again.

Teachers should try to avoid diving right into the schoolwork after break. Instead, make the adjustment a little bit easier by welcoming students back with fun classroom activities that incorporate what they did over their holiday vacations.

Here are a few ideas and classroom activities to get your students back on track and motivated to learn once again.

Classroom Activities: Create a Holiday Memory Book

Have students capture their best holiday moments in a memory book. Students will have more than enough to share, and a memory book is a great way to do that. Ask students to draw or bring in a picture of their favorite holiday outing or gift. Then ask students to write a few sentences about it. Once students have completed their memory book page, have them share it with the class or bind them all together to make a class book.

Make New Year’s Resolutions

Returning from holiday break is the perfect time to teach students how to reflect upon the past year and to make positive changes for the new year. Tell students that the new year means a fresh start and they can make promises to themselves that are positive and realistic. As a class, brainstorm a few resolutions together. Give them the following prompts to get started.

As soon as students enter the classroom after winter break, they inundate you (and each other) with stories about what every student received from Santa, or all of the fun places that they went while on break. What’s a better way to share all of their experiences and new toys then to bring something in for a little old show and tell? For a different spin on the traditional activity, try having students guess who brought what item in.

Creative Writing Prompts

A creative and calm activity to get your energetic students back into the grind is to have them write about what they did and received over break. Students can get the opportunity to discuss their adventures in a fun writing piece. For instance, ask students to write about the best gift they gave and what made it so special, or describe their family’s holiday traditions in detail. Here are a few more creative writing prompts.

  • What are you most grateful for this holiday season?
  • What was your favorite holiday food that you had over break?
  • Who was the person you spent the most time with and why? What did you do with them?
  • Write about a place that you went over the Christmas break.
  • Write about something you did with your family over Christmas break.

Play a Fun Game

Welcome your students back to school with a few fun games! Try to avoid piling on the schoolwork right away and instead try playing a few fun games to ease students back into the routine. Review games are a great choice for easing students back in. Try games like the “Hot Seat” where one student faces away from the board and chooses three people to give them clues about what is written on the board behind them. Another fun game is “Ping Pong,” where students are divided into teams of two and the team that gets the answer correct gets to throw a ping pong ball into a one of three cups to get a prize for their team. Prizes are things like a homework free pass or lunch in the classroom.

Host a Party

Before you must get back to all the school chaos and your crazy school day routine, kick off the first day or two back to school with a party! Invite the classroom next to yours over for some cookies and hot chocolate. Allow students to share their holiday break stories over a warm cup of cocoa! Students will love the ease and flow of a relaxing day back to school.

On any given day, teachers make more decisions in the first few minutes of entering their classrooms then probably anyone, anywhere. Not to mention they are on their feet for most of the day, and have to deal with 20 or more children (usually by themselves) for what seems to be an endless amount of hours.

Throw in the new year, when children are still bouncing off of the walls with excitement, and you have yourself a teacher that (most likely) feels like she is about to have a breakdown.

Luckily, there are many experienced teachers that have been through these times, and know a thing or two about how to make their teaching a little less stressful after the holiday season. Here are a few teaching strategies from the teachers who have survived these glorious post-holiday months.

Teaching Strategies: Don’t Try Too Hard

Oftentimes during the holidays, teachers feel the pressure of making things perfect. They want to be able to give their students a fun festive experience, so they spend a lot of time creating lessons, activities, crafts and parties that are a bit extravagant. While this is much appreciated from the students, it takes a lot of time and effort on the teacher’s part. Don’t try so hard, anyteaching strategies you choose to do during the post-holiday season will be good enough. Think simple and easy, and you will be on the road to having a stress-free post holiday.

It’s OK to Break from Your Normal Routine

This can be a hard one, because children thrive on routine. But with holiday parties, classroom gift exchanges, and Christmas plays, sometimes adjusting to your post-holiday curriculum schedule is difficult. It is okay to break from your normal routine for a period of time, the students will adjust. Just make sure that you tell your students the new year schedule so they can get accustomed to it during. Try your best to keep as close to it as you can, but also know that the students will be fine if you can’t.

Keep Organized

An organized classroom equals a happy classroom. After the holidays your classroom may tend to get in disarray from all of the holiday crafts and parties.  To keep this from happening you must stay organized. This means having students keep their papers in order, as well as you having designated spots in your classroom for papers to be organized. Keeping organized during this hectic time of the year will save you a lot of stress.

Get Active

The holidays are a time where students are bouncing off the walls with excitement. If you want your classroom to be less stressful after these times, then you must incorporate some sort of movement or exercise throughout the school day. After each activity or lesson, have students get up for about two minutes to get their wiggles out. You can do a few yoga moves, get up and stretch, dance or do Go Noodle. You will be surprised that in as little as two minutes how quickly you can settle down your students.

Post-holidays are a time to have fun! Don’t be afraid to laugh and have a good time. Laughter is said to be the best medicine for a stressful day. Have a sense of humor and laugh at yourself, play a game with the children, or tell a funny joke.

Each year, on the third Monday of January, classrooms across the country pause to remember the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This great leader of the civil rights movement made many contributions toward achieving peace and racial harmony in America.

Help students celebrate and honor the achievements of this amazing American by partaking in a few of the following classroom activities.

Classroom Activities: Daily Journal

Dr. King had many beliefs, and a great way to commemorate these beliefs is to have students share their own beliefs in a daily writing journal. Each morning for seat work, write a journal topic on the front board and then discuss it with your students. Do this for the whole month of January. Here is a few ideas to get you started.

  • How can you settle your differences with a friend without getting physical?
  • What is one thing that you could do that would make Dr. King happy?
  • Make a list of ten things that you can do to make the world a better place.
  • Pretend that you had an opportunity to interview Dr. King. Write three questions that you would like to ask him.
  • Imagine that you have no civil rights. What would your life be like?

Classroom Activities: Contributing Peace

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. always encouraged peace, and for that was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1964. To help incorporate the spirit of Dr. King, have students think of how they can contribute peace to the world. Give each student a large blank, white piece of paper, and have them cut out a big circle in the middle, at least 12 inches wide. Next, have students draw a peace sign on the circle. Once they have that, they must write their name in the bottom right-hand section, and draw a picture of themselves on the bottom left-hand section. The top two sections will be where they will write how they can contribute peace to the world. Some students may write things like, “I will help others” or “I will be kind to everyone I meet.” They can write anything that they want in the top two sections of the peace sign. Display these peaceful projects in the hallway for a reminder to all of Dr. King’s dream.

Do a Good Deed

It was important to Dr. King that everyone was treated equally. He was especially hurt when he wasn’t allowed to play with his two friends who were white all because of his skin color. Discuss with students how back in the day people of different color were treated unfairly and experienced discrimination. Ask students how they think they would feel if they weren’t allowed to play with their friends because they had a different eye color than them. Then discuss with students the importance of being kind to all people regardless of their differences. Challenge them to be aware of the way they treat others and tell them that for every time you catch them doing a good deed they will receive a bead. For each good deed, award the student a white bead, and alternate that bead with a black one. The student would then thread the beads alternating in color until they have received enough to make a bracelet. Encourage students to wear their finished bracelets as a reminder of Dr. King’s vision of peace and equality.

What are the lessons of this year’s A-levels?

A-level results have arrived, distributing good news and disappointment.

And it’s important to remember that behind all the statistics about hundreds of thousands of grades are personal stories of hopes and fears.

But it’s also an annual ritual to use A-level results as a way of taking stock of the education system.

This year it will be hard to throw accusations of “grade inflation” or slipping standards because the results are almost exactly the same as last year.

“Stability”, this year’s watchword from exam board chiefs, is not exactly going to set pulses racing.

But it will be what exam regulators intended, promoting reassurance and continuity rather than volatility and turbulence for the “gold standard” qualification.

Changes ahead

Head teachers, including those in independent schools, have often been vociferous in their doubts about the reliability of marking and the exam system.

And they have also complained about how an exam system which now promotes stability in results is reconciled with pressures on schools to keep getting higher grades, or else be accused of “coasting”.

But this year could also be something of a calm before the storm.

The results announced this week are for exams taken under the old system of A-levels.

The plans for tougher, non-modular exams and the decoupling of A and AS-levels, announced by former education secretary Michael Gove, have still to be introduced.

In many ways these results have been the closing act of the old exam system.

In a couple of years, when the redesigned A-levels are being taken for the first time, outcomes could be less predictable.

And when results seem so similar it’s easy to miss the big underlying patterns.

More students

The number of school leavers heading to university continues to rise relentlessly.

Regardless of government, economic cycles, fees and exam results, year after year, decade after decade, more young people sign up for undergraduate courses.

There will be more people starting university this autumn than were getting five good GCSEs a couple of decades ago. It’s a major social change.

In 1980, about 68,000 people were getting undergraduate degrees, by 2000 that had risen to 243,000.

On Thursday morning, even before clearing had begun and second choices had been weighed up, there were 409,000 places confirmed.

Upward curve

The removal of a limit on university numbers introduced this year is budgeted on the assumption that there is not much extra demand left in the system, perhaps another 30,000 or so.

But this has been a remarkably resilient, aspirational, upward curve.

It’s also worth noting that despite the irresistible rise in young full-time students, the number of part-time and mature students has never really recovered from the hike in tuition fees, despite repeated warnings about the skills gap and the need for re-training.

The gender divide is another pattern that seems to deepen.

Last year saw the widest gap, with 58,000 more women getting university places than men.

And the first admissions figures from this year show an even wider gap than at the same stage last year.

The headline UK figure for top A* and A grades fell marginally this year to 25.9%.

But in the south east of England the proportion was 38.8% and in London it was 36.2%.

In Wales, the figure is 23.1% and in Northern Ireland 29.3%.

Exam system devolution

This year’s A-level figures show maths, English and biology to be the most popular subjects, with maths having steadily increased in recent years.

But there is an even longer-term trend in the decline of French.

When the gender divide and national differences overlap, it means that in Wales there were only 128 boys taking A-level French this year.

The changes about to be introduced for A-levels in England will also accelerate devolution within the exam system.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland might continue to call their exams A-levels, but they are going to be increasingly different.

How long will the grades be published together as though they were equivalents?

But for the students and their families getting results there will be more immediate concerns with celebrations and commiserations.

This is the graduation season, with universities awash with gowns, photographers and ceremonial handshakes. But how are you going to get noticed in the sea of catering tents and pompous speeches?

1) It’s all about the hat: What is it about hats and graduations? Years of studying and you get to throw an impractical hat in the air. But the hat is the graduation scene stealer – either with a look-at-me message written on top or with rows of hats creating that symmetrical overhead photo opportunity.

Even when there’s a ban on throwing hats, that becomes the story. The attention-grabbing graduation ceremony needs a hat with a message and ideally someone slipping over when they’re wearing it.

2) Make your campus look like Hogwarts: Graduation is a curious mixture of ceremony, ritual, pseudo-religious imagery and young people feeling like they’ve achieved something against the odds. Which means there’s a lot in common with a Harry Potter adventure. Hebei Academy in China has brought this full circle. Last month’s graduation drew the world’s photographers because it actually looks like it’s been staged on a back-lot in Hogwarts.

3) Bring a dog: Among the most photographed graduates this year must have been Fudge the cocker spaniel, pictured in his canine-size robes at his owner’s graduation at Edinburgh Napier University. “I know it seems eccentric, but Fudge has been part of my journey through uni since day one,” said owner, Jack Proctor. Fudge was unavailable for comment, but he is believed to be considering postgraduate studies if he can manage the fees.

4) Old people with a poignant tale: George and Miko Kaihara, now aged 90, were part of the Japanese community in the United States interned during the Second World War. It meant that they never got to graduate. But that was put right last month, when these two veterans of the Class of 1943 finally got to pick up their diplomas. This is a much more uplifting way of getting people to see your graduation than funny pictures on YouTube of graduates in high heels falling over.

5) Keep them guessing: Particularly tough nuns about to take out the geography department? A remake of Sister Act with a special forces theme? These were Iranian female police cadets showing their skills at a graduation ceremony a few years ago. It’s a little different from the “motivational” speech from the bloke from Norwich who sponsored the new sports hall.

6) Deploy an old rocker: “Our future starts in our past – but it doesn’t end there”. “Choose a direction and if the road turns – turn! If there is a fork in the road – take it! 8) That big personal statement. Who can resist the perfect platform for a big statement? Friends and family are gathered, it’s a symbolic time of change, it’s a moment made for a big reveal. And so this year saw the coming out coming into the graduation hall.

9) Exit through the gift shop: Graduations have become merchandising opportunities. Part of the impact is now being felt, not just with a lump in the throat but with a substantial hit on the parental wallet. On top of the commemorative photos, outfit hire, food and souvenir mugs and T-shirts, there are now more upmarket souvenirs, such as graduation rings and jewellery. None of this fundraising feels as strange as some US colleges which offer university-themed coffins.

10) Toe-curlingly embarrassing dance routine: When they say something is going viral, it’s sometimes because it’s like a virus that makes you feel rather nauseous. Here’s the entirely spontaneous moment when students in Portsmouth, New Hampshire began to dance along to a Taylor Swift song. There’s something about organised fun that feels like you’ve been trapped in a terrible recurring nightmare.
