California Has Solid Data On Methane Leaks, Now They Need To Be Fixed


Until recently Californians were in the dark when it came to the state’s natural gas distribution system and its pollution. But all that is changing now; for the first time ever, consistent data on the annual methane emissions from gas utilities is available for all to see. And what does this data show? California has room to reduce leaks and tighten the integrity of its gas delivery system.

A move toward better transparency

California’s recent step to boost disclosure of the amount of emissions leaked and number of repairs made to gas pipelines and other equipment is the product of Senate Bill 1371(Leno) passed in 2014, and subsequent regulations from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). SB 1371 took this approach because methane, the main component of natural gas, is a powerful climate pollutant that puts our environment and communities at risk with a leak-prone system across the natural gas transmission, distribution and storage sectors.

This bill also resulted in the CPUC developing new formulas to calculate the statewide amount of gas that California customers pay for, but which is not delivered because it is leaked or vented into the air. This is important because SB 1371 also required that revenues for all activities identified and required to be adjusted based on the amount of “lost and unaccounted for gas”, meaning that customers are not left paying the bill for what gas goes unused.

Results speak for themselves

Last month, in a breakthrough for transparency, utilities submitted their eye-opening leak reports to the CPUC, shedding much-needed light on the state’s continued problem with gas leaks and methane pollution.

Here are some key findings that emerged from the reports:

  • California lost a lot of gas in 2015

In all, California lost almost 10 billion standard cubic feet of gas last year. While Aliso Canyon’s 2015 load was approximately one-third of this, the remaining gas lost through “normal” leaks and vents (about 6 billion SCF) has the same 20-year climate impact of burning about 1 billion gallons of gasoline.

  • Leaks have been going on for years

One surprising and unfortunate finding from the reports was the age of the methane leaks in the state, highlighting chronic problems with repair practices.

For instance, of the almost 46,000 distribution pipeline leaks reported by SoCalGas in 2015, more than 20 percent remained open at the end of the year, and over 1,000 of them have been leaking for five years or longer.

PG&E isn’t really any better in this regard, reporting that over 9,000 of their 20,000 total distribution pipeline leaks were left unrepaired for an average of over three years, while many exceeded five years – and at least one was over 30 years old. While the report didn’t explain why these leaks were left unfixed for so long, these chronic leaks show that improvements in leak detection and repair practices are urgently needed.

  • Top emissions sources are consistent across many or all of the utilities

All three of the largest California gas utilities Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) reported customer meter leaks as a leading source of emissions. Metering and regulating station leaks, distribution pipeline leaks and transmission pipeline blowdowns were also found to be a significant emission source at many of the utilities. This reinforces the need for more frequent detection and prioritized repair of leaks.  Blowdowns, which are intentional releases of gas to test or repair pipelines, can be easily and cost effectively mitigated, allowing for immediate reductions from a large emission source.

  • Aliso Canyon was huge, but not an isolated problem

Not so surprisingly, these reports reinforced the size and scale of the Aliso Canyon leak. This catastrophe accounted for 60% of SoCalGas’s system-wide emissions in 2015. It was also bigger than PG&E’s total annual emissions last year and nearly 15 times the annual emissions from SDG&E’s entire system. The reports, however, confirm that Aliso Canyon is an extreme example of an all-too common problem, and highlight the need for regulations to require more frequent leak survey and leak repair.

  • More improvements are needed for transparent, consistent reporting

Despite the findings noted above, what’s notable is what wasn’t included in the utilities’ methane leaks reports. For instance, many leaks had missing emissions data, and other emissions measurements weren’t assumed to apply to the entire system, likely leading to underestimates in emissions and leaving room for improvement.

In addition to leak reporting, SB 1371 also required utilities to fix leaks and reduce venting using best practices available in the gas industry. As this data shows, with thousands of leaks ongoing across the state, careful yet aggressive implementation is needed.

This initial round of data is a breakthrough for gas customers, who deserve to know how much gas is lost, and for utilities, giving them the tools needed to run a more efficient system. However, there is more work to be done to develop consistent reporting standards. Only then can we accurately determine the biggest sources of methane emissions and reduce these leaks, benefitting both Californians and our environment.

Games added to PlayStation Now today include Mafia II, Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Civilization Revolution,Heavy Rain (featuring The Taxidermist DLC), and Borderlands: Ultimate Edition. Sony also revealed that Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is being added to the catalog in October, alongside other Halloween-themed games to be announced later.


To mark the launch of PlayStation Now for PC, Sony is bringing back its 12-month all-you-can-play subscription plan. Like it did before, this will cost $100, which Sony points out saves you 55 percent compared to what you’d pay if you were on the monthly plan.

A one-month subscription goes for $20, while a three-month package is available for $45. Games are also available to rent on an individual basis, with pricing dependent on the rental duration and title. Newcomers can try the service free for seven days.

A minimum 5Mbps connection is required for PlayStation Now on PC or any other supported devices, including PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Sony recommends a wired connection for the best experience.

Demand for in-home Wi-Fi bandwidth continues to soar. Cable companies are rolling out faster internet connections as households increase their number of connected devices and HD video consumption. Until recently, getting high-performance Wi-Fi coverage through a large home or apartment has required some technical heavy lifting. Now, however, there are several options for easy-to-install, mesh-based Wi-Fi systems. The newest entry is a pricey, but promising, one from a major player, Netgear. Its Orbi system includes a router unit and a satellite unit for covering larger areas — up to 4,000 square feet total according to the company.

Much like its competitors, including Eero and Luma that we’ve written about here before, you can configure Orbi from your smartphone or browser. Therouter is pre-paired with the included satellite unit, which you simply place in the center of the area you want covered and plug it in. The result is a unified network (with a single user-selectable SSID) throughout the house.

One large improvement featured in the Orbi is that it uses tri-band networking. The base unit communicates with the satellite using a dedicated 1.7Gbps 5GHz band — allowing the other two bands to be used entirely for Wi-Fi device bandwidth. If you’re accustomed to setting up access points and know how to assign channels, and match SSIDs and passwords, then you may not care much about the ease of administration offered by this new generation of offerings like Orbi. But the convenience of not needing to run wires to your additional access points is still a big win for anyone with a structure that isn’t already pre-wired. (We’ve reached out to Netgear to ask whether additional satellite units can be added to the base unit; since coverage claims are almost always overestimated, that may be a concern for anyone considering Orbi).

Orbi features and pricing

The main unit and satellite both include four gigabit Ethernet ports — a welcome feature, as when using the otherwise excellent Unifi APs, you need to pair them with a hub to serve local devices. The Orbi system is pricey at $400 when it ships in September — above the pre-order prices of some of its competitors, but not out of line with their final retail prices. Clearly you are paying something for the integration and ease of use, although the tri-band feature alone may make the purchase worth it for many.

What is 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and how much faster than 802.11n is it?

Faster Wi-Fi: It’s something we all crave. Fortunately, it’s also something we can have, even on a budget. It’s not just about fast Internet speeds to and from your service provider. It’s also about transferring files between devices in your home or office, streaming video from a network-attached drive to a television, and gaming with the lowest network latencies possible. If you’re looking for faster Wi-Fi performance, you want 802.11ac — it’s that simple.

In essence, 802.11ac is a supercharged version of 802.11n. 802.11ac is dozens of times faster, and delivers speeds ranging from 433 Mbps (megabits per second) up to several gigabits per second. To achieve that kind of throughput, 802.11ac works exclusively in the 5GHz band, uses plenty of bandwidth (80 or 160MHz), operates in up to eight spatial streams (MIMO), and employs a kind of technology called beamforming that sends signal directly to client devices.

If you’re currently using an 802.11n router — or an even older 802.11b/g model, like the perennial favorite Linksys WRT54G — and are thinking of upgrading to 802.11ac, here’s what you need to know.

How 802.11ac works

Years ago, 802.11n introduced some exciting technologies that brought massive speed boosts over 802.11b and g. 802.11ac does something similar compared with 802.11n. For example, 802.11n supported four spatial streams (4×4 MIMO) and a channel width of 40MHz. But 802.11ac can utilize eight spatial streams and has channels up to 80MHz wide — which can then be combined to make 160MHz channels. Even if everything else remained the same (and it doesn’t), this means 802.11ac has 8x160MHz of spectral bandwidth to play with versus 4x40MHz — a huge difference that allows 802.11ac to squeeze vast amounts of data across the airwaves.

To boost throughput further, 802.11ac also introduces 256-QAM modulation (up from 64-QAM in 802.11n), which squeezes 256 different signals over the same frequency by shifting and twisting each into a slightly different phase. In theory, that quadruples the spectral efficiency of 802.11ac over 802.11n. Spectral efficiency measures how well a given wireless protocol or multiplexing technique uses the bandwidth available to it. In the 5GHz band, where channels are fairly wide (20MHz+), spectral efficiency isn’t so important. In cellular bands, though, channels are often only 5MHz wide, which makes spectral efficiency very important.

802.11ac also introduces standardized beamforming (802.11n had it, but it wasn’t standardized, which made interoperability an issue). Beamforming transmits radio signals in such a way that they’re directed at a specific device. This can increase overall throughput and make it more consistent, as well as reduce power consumption. Beamforming can be done with smart antennae that physically move to track a device, or by modulating the amplitude and phase of the signals so that they destructively interfere with each other, leaving just a narrow, interference-free beam. The older 802.11n uses this second method, which can be implemented by both routers and mobile devices.

Finally, 802.11ac, like 802.11 versions before it, is fully backwards compatible — so you can buy an 802.11ac router today, and it should work just fine with your older 802.11n and 802.11g Wi-Fi devices.

How fast is 802.11ac?

In theory, on the 5GHz band and using beamforming, 802.11ac should have the same or better range than 802.11n (without beamforming). The 5GHz band, thanks to less penetration power, doesn’t have quite the same range as 2.4GHz (802.11b/g). But that’s the trade-off we have to make: There simply isn’t enough spectral bandwidth in the massively overused 2.4GHz band to allow for 802.11ac’s gigabit-level speeds. As long as your router is well-positioned, or you have multiple routers, it shouldn’t matter much. The more important factors will be the transmission power and antenna quality of your devices.

And finally, the question everyone wants to know: Just how fast is Wi-Fi 802.11ac? As always, there are two answers: the theoretical max speed that can be achieved in the lab, and the practical maximum speed you’ll most likely receive at home in the real world, surrounded by lots of signal-attenuating obstacles.

WiFi 802.11acThe theoretical max speed of 802.11ac is eight 160MHz 256-QAM channels, each of which are capable of 866.7Mbps, for a total of 6,933Mbps, or just shy of 7Gbps. That’s a transfer rate of 900 megabytes per second — more than you can squeeze down a SATA 3 link. In the real world, thanks to channel contention, you probably won’t get more than two or three 160MHz channels, so the max speed comes down to somewhere between 1.7Gbps and 2.5Gbps. Compare this with 802.11n’s max theoretical speed, which is 600Mbps.

In situations where you don’t need the maximum performance and reliability of wired gigabit Ethernet — still a good option for situations requiring the highest performance — 802.11ac is certainly compelling. Instead of cluttering up your living room by running an Ethernet cable to the home theater PC under your TV, 802.11ac now has enough bandwidth to wirelessly stream the highest-definition content to your game console, set top box, or home theater PC. For all but the most demanding use cases, 802.11ac is a  viable alternative to Ethernet.

The future of 802.11ac

802.11ac will only get faster, too. As we mentioned earlier, the theoretical max speed of 802.11ac is just shy of 7Gbps — and while you’ll never hit that in a real-world scenario, we wouldn’t be surprised to see link speeds of 2Gbps or more in the next few years. At 2Gbps, you’ll get a transfer rate of 256MB/sec, and suddenly Ethernet serves less and less purpose if that happens. To reach such speeds, chipset and device makers will need to implement four or more 802.11ac streams, both in terms of software and hardware.

We imagine Broadcom, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Marvell, and Intel are already well on their way to implementing four- and eight-stream 802.11ac solutions for integration in the latest routers, access points, and mobile devices — but until the 802.11ac spec is finalized, second-wave chipsets and devices are unlikely to emerge. Chipset and device manufacturers have plenty of work ahead to ensure advanced features, such as beamforming, comply with the standard and are inter-operable with other 802.11ac devices.

There are 60 attributes often used to assess all types of leaders. On nine of those, CEOs are very different from other types of executives and leaders. The biggest differences between CEOs and other executives are that they can ‘read’ people, they have bias towards action, and they are ready to take risks when needed. The other six points are that they are forward thinking, that they are optimistic, that they are tough minded but constructively so, that they have measured emotion, that they are pragmatically inclusive, and that they are willing to trust others.

Those nine attributes have been divided in three broad categories, being:

  1. Forward thinking, which means they are capable of planning for any type of future.
  2. Intrepid, which means they can deal with difficult and complex environments.
  3. Team building, which means they understand their success depends on others.

There were some interesting findings as well, which made CEOs almost paradoxical. For instance:

  • A CEO is tough, but emotionally sensitive at the same time.
  • A CEO is strategic, but also tactical.
  • A CEO is decisive, but very inclusive.

What does this mean? Essentially, it means that they know how to act and when. Including others in the decision making process, for instance, means employees become more engaged and feel more valued. But sometimes, a decision has to be made there and then, and only a CEO can do this. Only they can make these decisions, and only they can anticipate when it is needed.

How to Become a CEO

Becoming a CEO is a long journey, one that requires a lot of hard work, experience, and education. But there are bits that you can focus on, thereby increasing your chances:

  • Look at the nine attributes and incorporate them into how you work today. You will be questioned about this when you have an interview.
  • Write an individual development plan, particularly if you hope to promote to the position of CEO.
  • Always take part in performance reviews, and learn from those to see where you can do better.

A recent rumor stated that the senior management team at Oracle had an emergency strategy meeting to discuss the future of the hardware and software to their retail customers, one of their largest markets. However, Mark Hurd, the current Oracle CEO, was not said to have been involved. The new rumor is, however, that he is now taking part. So why are they so worried? Because of Charles Phillips Infor CEO and former Oracle President.

Infor was never a competitor, until Phillips resigned his Oracle position and took up the helm at Infor. While, when he first started there, the company still wasn’t a threat, in the few years since Phillips took over, it has made some serious changes. One of those changes is that he has revamped his executive team, which now includes many people from Oracle.

Around a year ago, Oracle acquired Micros for some $5 billion. The hope was to get higher sales in the hospitality and retail industries. And this is precisely where Infor is involved as well, focusing more on micro-verticals. Both companies create enterprise software, but Infor goes for extreme specialization. For instance, rather than offering things for the hospitality industry as a whole, they focus on brewers and bakers specifically.

For decades, the industry leader has been SAP, followed by Oracle, and Microsoft trailing in third, not really being a threat to anyone. But today, Infor is suddenly showing up, and some suggest they even share second place with Oracle. For the competitive Oracle team, second place is the first loser, and it simply won’t do.

There are more rumors as well, one being that a big Infor announcement specific to the retail industry will soon follow. Apparently, this has something to do with a $10 billion revenue. In December, they created a branch within their company specific for retail, spearheaded by Corey Tollefson. Tollefson worked for Oracle until that point.

Phillips remains closely tied to Oracle, through his personal relationships, something that he always fosters. So it is no surprise that there is an exodus of people from Oracle wanted to join Infor. In fact, this started in 2010, when he took up positions, and Duncan Angove immediately followed him.

Besides Tollefson, others have joined as well. This includes Nick Ciminillom Randy Ray, and Richard Berger, each of whom is likely to take some of their best people with them at the same time. Ciminillo heads the retail strategy at Infor, following on from his position on Walmart’s Innovation Council.

Oracle is rightfully worried, with stocks being at an all time low has well. When Oracle moved to a cloud computing sales and subscription model, its value plummeted and they are struggling to recover. Added to the worry of its investors and shareholders is now the fact that Infor is right behind them. In one way, strong competition is a good thing, because it drives innovation. On the other hand, increased pressure in a company already under pressure can be too much. Executives at Oracle, however, have always said that they thrive on pressure and competition.
